Mother Nature…sometimes she treats us well and sometimes she throws a curve. This spring our olive trees were blanketed with tiny white blossoms and we were confident that 2009, our 2nd year of production, was going to yield a bumper crop. But in late July, our euphoria slipped as we became increasingly aware that the fruit set had been minimal and by fall we learned that we were not alone. Growers throughout Southern Calfiornia were experiencing the same disappointment with their olive crops. Best guess (that’s what farmers often seem to do) is that May’s 100-degree-plus temperatures accompanied by high, gusty winds prevented the fruit to set.
This year’s yield may be low BUT the quality is great. Like fine wines, artisan olive oils differ from year to year and this year’s olio nuevo boasts a strong, robust and peppery flavor that will linger until the end of January. Then it will begin to mellow into a long-lasting, rich, smooth and slightly peppery oil – with a taste and aroma reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside.
